Chaos erupts as furious fans pelt chairs, bottles at Messi's India appearance.

Lionel Messi’s highly awaited appearance at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata sparked chaos when disillusioned fans turned rowdy after a brief and restricted glimpse of the global football icon. Disappointed by limited access and visibility, some attendees vandalized stadium property, tearing seats and tossing objects toward the field. Thousands of fans, many of whom paid as much as ₹12,000 (approximately £100 or $133), had packed the stadium with hopes of seeing the Argentine legend up close.

However, Messi's short walk around the pitch was largely obscured by officials, dignitaries, and celebrities, leaving supporters visibly upset. The Argentina and Inter Miami forward was escorted away by security after roughly 20 minutes, prompting outrage from sections of the crowd. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee later expressed her disappointment, saying she was "deeply disturbed and shocked" by the incident. Messi's visit to India is part of his "GOAT Tour," a series of promotional events spanning Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi.

The tour kicked off with the virtual unveiling of a towering 70-foot statue in Kolkata, created over 27 days by a 45-member team. Due to safety considerations, Messi did not attend the ceremony in person. Despite the virtual start, thousands gathered at Salt Lake Stadium in anticipation of a live appearance. Enthusiastic fans wore "I Love Messi" headbands, waved banners, and bought merchandise, eager to cheer for their idol. Initially, Messi greeted the crowd with waves, but his sudden departure led to frustration spilling over. Some attendees stormed the field, while others damaged banners, tents, chairs, and hurled water bottles.
According to reports by AFP, Messi was expected to participate in a short exhibition match—something that did not materialize, adding to the audience's disappointment. Several attendees voiced their frustration. "We paid ₹12,000 for this, and we couldn’t even see his face properly," one fan told ANI. Another spectator, who spent ₹5,000 on tickets to attend with his son, told PTI, "We came to watch Messi, not politicians. It was chaos. Security personnel were more focused on taking selfies than managing the crowd." Messi was accompanied on this leg of the tour by his Inter Miami teammate Luis Suárez and Argentina’s Rodrigo De Paul. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan also met Messi earlier that day, as reported by Reuters.

Kolkata, known for its passionate football following in a nation dominated by cricket, often draws enormous crowds for local club derbies. The turnout for Messi further confirmed the city’s deep-rooted love for the sport. Following the unrest, Chief Minister Banerjee announced a formal inquiry into the incident and issued a public apology to Messi and disappointed fans. She said the committee would investigate what went wrong, assign accountability, and propose preventive measures for future events.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the event’s chief organiser had been arrested, although further details were not disclosed. Authorities are also evaluating possible refunds for affected ticket holders. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) clarified that it had no role in the privately organized event.
Earlier that day, crowds had gathered outside Messi's hotel from the early morning hours, hoping to catch a glimpse of their hero. Among them was Hitesh, a 24-year-old corporate lawyer who flew nearly 1,900 kilometers from Bengaluru. “Messi means more than football to me,” he told the BBC. “I’m short, I play football for fun, and I relate to his journey. He gives me belief that talent matters more than anything.” Messi’s visit is being celebrated across the city, with a dedicated “Hola Messi” fan zone featuring a life-size replica of the footballer on a throne, a trophy display hall, and a recreation of his Miami home complete with mannequins of Messi and his family.
